What is Planning?
Land Use Planning is a collaborative process that aims to improve the quality of life of people and their community by creating more convenient, equitable, efficient, and attractive places for present and future generations to live, work and play. Civic leaders, businesses, and citizens can have a meaningful role in creating a community that enriches people’s lives by defining a common vision. Quality planning aims to create communities that offer more choices for where and how people live. Planning also assists in achieving a sustainable balance of new development, essential services, environmental protections, recreational opportunities, and innovative design. (*The current version of the Marquette Township Master Plan is being updated, as required by state statute every five (5) years. It is scheduled to be completed in the first part of 2019.)

What is Zoning?
Zoning is a tool used to ensure the public health, safety, and general welfare of our residents and visitors by guiding how a property may be developed or improved upon. The Marquette Township Zoning Ordinance provides for a wide-range of development interests, as well as to preserve land that holds natural or cultural value. Zoning laws ensure that land use is consistent within a specific area, and that conflicting uses like heavy industry and residential housing are kept isolated from each other. However, in some cases, some commercial or entertainment-type land uses may blend in with residential development because it is low-impact, or because it may benefit residents in a particular area. The zoning ordinance is the legal document that assists Marquette Township Planning & Zoning Department staff with administering land development in our community.
