Our History
Marquette Charter Township is a municipal unit of government that is 167 years old. The township originally formed on February 15, 1848 by the Michigan Legislature – Act 41, Section 9. From the first discovery of iron in the 1840s, most who came into the area were involved with surveying, or were prospectors and speculators. Subsequent mining and forest resource activities played a vital role in the area’s development and settlement by its people. As technology progressed in mining and forestry, the community acclimated to provide more diverse opportunities for employment and education.
Today, Marquette Township serves the community as a commercial, recreational, retail, entertainment, and economic hub for the entire Upper Peninsula. The area features sound institutions, such as a regional hospital and Northern Michigan University. New mining opportunities have been realized in recent years and have become a staple in the area’s new economy, which also features a blend of service, recreation, tourism, forestry and industrial activities.
